Let’s face it, change is the only constant, often accompanied by its faithful companion: adversity. The intermingling of change and adversity can create a perfect storm of challenges, testing our resilience and fortitude. Whether it's a career transition, a personal upheaval, or societal shifts, navigating through change requires strategies to manage stressors effectively.
Change has a huge impact on the brain. Being able to understand change and then cope with it through strategies you've fostered in yourself, helps build your resilience AND our resilience also can help us mingle through change.
Here are 7 strategy suggestions you might try:
-
Pause and Be Present:
In the whirlwind of change and adversity, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the past or anxious about the future. However, taking a moment to pause and be present can provide much-needed clarity and perspective. Mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or grounding techniques can help individuals anchor themselves in the present moment. You can navigate change with greater calmness and clarity by cultivating presence.
Let’s try this in action:
Take 5 minutes to sit with yourself. Focus on the world around you. What do you see, hear, smell, taste, touch? Be conscious and notice all of your surroundings and your senses.
-
Recenter Yourself Through Breath Work:
The breath is a powerful tool for regulating emotions and reducing stress. Incorporating breathwork techniques into daily routines can help individuals recenter themselves amidst adversity. Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, alternate nostril breathing, or box breathing can activate the body's relaxation response, promoting a sense of calm and balance.
Practicing:
Let’s focus on deep breathing. Pause for a moment and take a deep, slow breath in. At the end of your inhalation, pause for just 2-3 seconds and then slowly blow your air out. Continue with this practice for as long as you can sit still and until you feel a sense of peace.
-
Prioritize Self-Care:
Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity, especially during times of change and adversity. Prioritizing activities that nourish the body, mind, and soul is essential for maintaining resilience and well-being. This can include practices such as taking leisurely walks, indulging in hobbies, practicing gratitude, or simply resting and rejuvenating.
Let’s Apply:
What is one thing that you enjoy doing? Make yourself a promise today that you will set aside time to do that exact thing. It doesn’t need to be a long block of time, even short blocks of time are helpful.
-
Name and Tame Your Stressors:
Identifying and acknowledging stressors is the first step toward managing them effectively. By naming their stressors, you can gain a sense of control and agency over your circumstances. This can involve journaling, talking to a trusted friend or therapist, or simply reflecting on what triggers their stress reactions.
Let’s Reflect:
The last time you felt stressed, and maybe that’s at this very minute, what caused you to be stressed? It’s often not the first thing we think about. So your challenge today is after the first response comes up, acknowledge and say, “OK, and what else might be causing me to feel stressed?” Really dig deep so you can identify and name all potential stressors, even the ones that are hidden.
-
Set Aside Time For Exercise:
Physical activity is not only beneficial for the body but also for the mind. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance resilience. Whether it's going for a run, practicing yoga, or engaging in strength training, prioritizing exercise can provide a much-needed outlet for releasing tension and boosting resilience.
Let’s Consider:
What is your favorite form of exercise? Remember, exercise doesn’t have to be something you hate, maybe it’s a walk with a friend or vacuuming. Whatever it might be, chunk time in your calendar for exercise over the next few days and check in with yourself after you exercise to notice how you feel.
-
Focus on Nutrition:
Nutrition plays a crucial role in resilience, providing the body with the necessary nutrients to function optimally during times of stress. Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats supports immune function, stabilizes mood, and enhances resilience. Prioritizing nutritious foods can empower individuals to navigate through change with vitality and strength.
Let’s Dive In:
This one might be harder if you are a stress eater because in times of stress we then often crave food that isn’t as balanced for us. What if, in those times, you allowed yourself to have the snack you’re craving and then balanced other nutritious foods during other times? Balance isn’t about in the moment, it’s about the bigger picture overall.
-
Zero in on Quality Sleep:
Quality sleep is essential for resilience and overall well-being. During sleep, the body repairs and rejuvenates itself, replenishing energy stores and enhancing cognitive function. Establishing a consistent sleep routine, creating a relaxing sleep environment, and practicing relaxation techniques can promote restorative sleep and enable individuals to navigate through change with clarity and vigor.
Let’s Snooze Off:
The amount of sleep each one of us needs is largely individual, yet we do know that often somewhere between 7-9 hours of sleep is optimal. Try incorporating scents like lavender into your nighttime routine, using a sleep machine, trying weight blankets or eye masks, and setting up pure darkness to enable you to have the best night’s sleep.
Armed with a toolkit of seven resilience strategies, ranging from mindfulness and self-care to quality sleep, we possess the means to not only weather life's storms but to emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side. By incorporating these strategies into our daily lives, we empower ourselves to navigate change with resilience, grace, and an unwavering sense of purpose. Remember, resilience is not merely about enduring hardships; it's about harnessing the power within us to thrive in the face of adversity.
